The ensemble of the new science buildings for the Max Planckgesellschaft and the Humboldt University are positioned in urbanplanning context in a way that reinforces the character of the landscape park along the Panke and a new, connecting park between the banks of the Panke and the Philipp Street is created. The volumes of the new buildings respect the heritage context and strengthen their characteristics. The horizontal and vertical disposition of the new façade for the Optobiologie building is developed as a grammar based on the façade disposition of the listed, historic buildings. The new façade is both independent and identity-forming. Grammar and materiality are continued in the sloping roofs. The defining image of the building is enhanced by the common use of brick and stone façade and roof. The building of the new building for the Max Planck Society are subtly folded around the existing building and the Remise, in a way that two courtyards remain and the Remise is visible from the other side of the Panke. The grammar of the deposition of the new façade of the Max Planck Society building is an abstraction of the facade design of existing school building to obtain its unique charakter. The new buildings are integrated harmoniously into the context, have their own identity and reinforce the character of the landscape campus park.
